Adobe Reader locking open files

We have a shared network drive on where we store pdfs containing assembly instructions.

Every now and then these instructions need to be updated. But if a user somewhere on the network is viewing this file it is locked and cannot be deleted/overwritten.

Why is this and more importantly how do I prevent it from happening?
