Can't open pdf email attachment, or download new acrobat reader

I have Windows 7 on my laptop and I'm using Google Chrome.

In my hotmail account, I have received an important pdf I need to download ASAP however I can't. Here's what happens:

-I click on the icon to download the .pdf file

-It downloads as shown as bottom of browser like normal

-I click on it, which would normally open it

-Instead of the pdf opening I get a notice from Adobe Design and Web Premium Trial, 'your trial has expired'. I did a few months ago download the trial to be able to use photoshop, however I know I had adobe reader before that trial and I'm pretty sure you can get it for free

-(Same thing happens if I choose option to download file from email as 'zip')

-I go to the website and try to download adobe reader again, It gets pretty far through, like 80-90% and then a dialogue box pops up saying 'Adobe Reader XI: Some files that need to be updated are currently in use, The following application need to be closed etc. and then underneath it lists Adobe Reader.

-Adobe reader is definitely not open, I have tried closing down every program running pretty much, and I have run task manager and it still says it's not running

HELP please! I really need this document.

Thanks a lot
