Adobe Reader XI won't open "some" PDF's

ISSUE

  • Some PDF's I try to open fail to do so (whether on my network or local PC)
  • Note: Most PDF's will load without a problem from the network, local PC, or internet embedded (IE)

WHAT I'M SEEING

  • I double click a PDF and the Reader loads to the "Open a Recent File" splash screen, but the file does not launch.
  • I also tried to launch the Reader first and do a "File Open" with the same results.
  • No error message is presented
  • No Errors/Warnings found in Application Event Log

ENVIRONMENT

  • Adobe Reader XI (11.0.2)
  • Tested on Both Windows XP (w/ IE 8) and Windows 7 (w/ IE 9 & 10)

READER INSTALLATION

The reader was installed with the customization tool with the following:

  1. Suppress display of EULA
  2. Protected View Off (Default)
  3. Disable Product Improvement Program
  4. Also, after the installation, I push out a registry change to the HKLU hive to disable "Protected Mode at Startup".

STEPS TAKEN THAT HAVEN'T WORKED

  1. I clicked the button "Select Default PDF Handler" under Preferences | General
  2. Did an application repair from "Add/Remove" programs in Windows Control Pane in both Win XP and Win 7
  3. Disabled "Enhanced Security" under Preferences | Security (Enhanced)
  4. Rebooted and tried again
  5. Ran 5 outstanding Windows Updates, Rebooted and tried again (non of the updates were related to NVIDIA graphics as proposed in another post)

If anyone has any idea on how to identify a fix or if the files I'm trying to open are corrupt in some way, I would greatly appreciate your help.  The problem with the idea that the files are corrupt, is that there are numberous files scattered throughout different folders on my network and I see no reason why so many would/could be corrupt.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
